It appears that the new Holešky testnet will change Goerli.
On September 15th, Ethereum’s development team announced the introduction of a new testnet named Holešky and the allocation of 1.6 billion Holešky testnet Ether (HETH) to spur network activities.
According to developer documents, the network will be used for staking, infrastructure, and protocol testing.

Tim Beiko, a prominent Ethereum developer, revealed that the 1.6 billion Holešky testnet Ether (HETH) set aside for the new network aims to expedite its operational capabilities. The allocation is tenfold the Ether (ETH) available on Ethereum’s mainnet.
Beiko justified the substantial allocation, stating that “devnets [are] regularly using 10B supply.” This high supply is expected to solve some challenges related to testnet capacity.
Before Holešky’s launch, the Goerli testnet had been the primary network for infrastructure, protocol, and staking experimentation. Goerli has operated since 2018, making it the longest-running Ethereum testnet.
However, recent developer feedback pointed out that Goerli’s ETH supply was insufficient for robust testing activities, leading to the need for an alternative with a more generous initial supply, such as Holešky.
Another testnet, Sepolia, introduced last year, will continue to serve as the main platform for app developers. Ethereum’s team had already encouraged the developer community to transition from Goerli to Sepolia for application testing.
With the debut of Holešky, Goerli’s days are seemingly numbered; it’s scheduled to be deprecated in January 2024. Even though Goerli will be maintained for an additional year after deprecation, it’s clear that Holešky and Sepolia are now the focal points for Ethereum’s future development.
The Holešky testnet is not just a response to past challenges but also a stepping stone for Ethereum’s ambitious future. Developers are gearing up to implement several advanced features, including proto-danksharding and danksharding, aimed at reducing transaction fees.
Innovations like Verkle trees are also on the roadmap, intended to lessen the costs of running a node. All planned features will initially be tested on Holešky before their mainnet launch.
The arrival of the Holešky testnet and a significant initial ETH supply marks a new phase in Ethereum’s ongoing development. The testnet aims to address past limitations while laying the groundwork for new features. As Ethereum closes the older Goerli testnet, Holešky is well-positioned to become a cornerstone for the network’s future enhancements.
